More than a view.

The Afar Region occupies Ethiopia’s northeastern lowlands, where the country meets Djibouti and Eritrea and where the African continent is being pulled apart along an active rift. It contains some of Ethiopia’s most distinctive travel landscapes: the salt and lava fields of the Danakil Depression, Erta Ale’s volcanic massif, the mineral formations of Dallol, hypersaline Lake Afrera and the lower course of the Awash River. Semera is the regional capital and the practical air gateway for Ruftana journeys. From the city, distances quickly open into a powerful geography of escarpments, dry plains, volcanic ridges and seasonal watercourses.

The Afar people are the heart of this region. Afar communities have long adapted pastoral life, trade and movement to heat and limited water, raising camels, goats, sheep and cattle and maintaining social networks across a vast territory. Oral exchange, local authority and knowledge of routes and weather remain important. Visitors should approach settlements, portraits, ceremonies and working salt landscapes with permission and humility. Afar also contains nationally and internationally important protected and heritage landscapes. Hadar lies within the Lower Awash area associated with Lucy and other fossil evidence that transformed the study of human evolution. Awash National Park links acacia savanna, volcanic ground, hot springs, a river gorge and wildlife, while the Alledeghi Plains and Yangudi Rassa extend the region’s dry-country ecological story. Conditions can be demanding and access changes with weather, roads, volcanic activity and official guidance.
