More than a view.

Lake Afrera, also known as Lake Afdera or Giulietti, is a hypersaline lake in the northern Ethiopian Danakil Depression. NASA imagery shows the lake surrounded by dark volcanic flows, pale evaporite deposits and salt-production ponds. Natural hot springs feed the lake, and the surrounding ground records eruptions from several nearby volcanic systems. This mixture of water, salt and lava makes Afrera an important geographic transition on journeys between Semera and Erta Ale.

Salt has been produced around the lake for generations and remains visible in the patterned evaporation areas and stacked deposits near the shore. Visitors should remember that these are active workplaces rather than staged attractions. Ruftana’s guides explain what can be visited safely and where photography is appropriate. Swimming is not automatically included: water quality, access, local permission and current conditions must all be checked, and guests should follow instructions around hot springs, sharp salt crust and unstable shoreline ground.

On the daily Danakil tour, Lake Afrera is usually visited on the first day as the convoy travels from Ruftana Hotel toward the Erta Ale base area. It provides a valuable pause for landscape interpretation, a fresh meal and hydration before entering rougher volcanic terrain. The stop may move or change with time, road conditions and temperature. For photographers, the strongest story is often the contrast between pale salt, green-blue water, black lava and the practical human infrastructure that supports life in an extreme environment.

Because the Danakil is seasonally demanding, the length and exact location of the Afrera stop remain flexible. Guests benefit from polarized sunglasses, sun protection and footwear that can handle sharp, uneven salt.
