Semera is the administrative capital of Ethiopia’s Afar Region and the practical gateway for many journeys into the Danakil Depression and Lower Awash. Scheduled air connections make it possible to arrive from Addis Ababa without a long overland approach. The city links regional government, commerce, accommodation and transport, while the surrounding roads lead toward Logiya, Dubti, Mille, Lake Afrera, Hadar and the volcanic north. Alalobad Hot Springs are also presented by Ruftana as about 15 kilometers from Semera.

Ruftana Travel & Tours is owned by Ruftana Hotel and operates its main office from the hotel in Semera. That relationship turns the city into more than a pickup point. Guests can arrive before an expedition, use an airport transfer, store luggage that is not suitable for the desert, meet guides, check equipment and receive a field briefing in a comfortable setting. Discounted rooms, meals, Wi-Fi, showers and pre- or post-tour accommodation can be coordinated according to the confirmed package.

Every Ruftana tour—including journeys to Awash, Alledeghi and Hadar—physically begins and finishes at Ruftana Hotel. This gives travelers one accountable team from arrival through return and simplifies flight and vehicle planning. After demanding camping or long road days, the return to familiar staff, luggage and a shower matters. Ruftana also maintains a representative office in Addis Ababa for wider travel services, but Semera remains the operational heart of the Afar program.

Visitors can also use Semera as a base for a shorter Alalobad excursion, business travel or a carefully paced private program. Ruftana’s local presence helps coordinate last-minute operational information that distant operators may not have. Building a buffer night before and after a demanding expedition is recommended, especially when onward flights or international connections leave little room for delay.
