The itinerary.

Final timing is confirmed at the Ruftana Hotel briefing and remains responsive to field conditions.

Day 1

Ruftana Hotel, Semera – Lake Afrera – Erta Ale Volcano

Meet your Ruftana team at the hotel in Semera for breakfast, introductions and a detailed safety briefing. Once luggage and drinking water are checked, the 4×4 convoy travels north through the changing lava, desert and settlement landscapes of the Afar Region. The route includes a stop around hypersaline Lake Afrera, where salt, dark volcanic ground and distant ridges reveal the tectonic character of the Danakil Depression. Your professional chef prepares a fresh lunch before the journey continues toward the Erta Ale base area. In the cooler late afternoon or evening, the guide leads the condition-appropriate approach toward the summit camp and crater viewing area. Walking time and the precise viewpoint depend on volcanic activity, access and official direction. Dinner is prepared by the Ruftana Hotel chef, followed by a basic supported night in the extraordinary volcanic landscape.

Day 2

Erta Ale – Afar Desert – Lake Asale Sunset

Wake early for another guided view of Erta Ale when conditions allow. The basaltic shield volcano rises from a landscape shaped by repeated lava flows, and the quiet morning light often makes the scale of the crater area easier to understand. After breakfast, descend to the vehicles and continue across the Danakil Depression toward the northern salt country. The long drive is part of the expedition: lava fields give way to dry plains, Afar settlements and broad horizons that show how communities move through this demanding environment. Fresh meals and drinking water are provided by the traveling kitchen team. In the late afternoon, reach Lake Asale for the low light across the salt surface and, when present, the sight of camel caravans connected to the historic salt trade. Continue to the prepared desert camp for dinner and a second supported overnight.

Day 3

Dallol Geothermal Fields – Salt Canyons – Ruftana Hotel

Begin before the strongest heat and travel to Dallol with a local guide. The visit follows approved walking lines through a fragile geothermal landscape of salt formations, acidic springs and mineral colors produced by heat, brine and volcanic gases. Because the crust can be thin and the fluids hazardous, guests remain with the guide and never step into pools or cross untested ground. Continue to selected salt canyons and working landscapes where the guide explains the relationship between geology, salt extraction and generations of Afar knowledge. After a freshly prepared breakfast and lunch during the day, the expedition turns south for Semera. Rest stops are adapted to temperature, road and group needs. The tour finishes where it began—at Ruftana Hotel—with access to showers, luggage, a return meal and support for your onward flight or accommodation.
